Ever seen those the iconic scenes in movies such as The Transporter and Taxi, where the number plate of the car flips from one to another at the press of a button? Well, believe it or not, both the mechanism and plates can actually be purchased on e-commerce sites, and it’s actually, and surprisingly, not that difficult.
Now, before you get all excited and try to buy one for yourself, know that it is illegal to have them as an accessory on your vehicle, and has been for a long time. This was pointed out by Federal Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) Director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri.
Any motorist found equipped with this device can be convicted under Section 108 of the Road Transport Act. If convicted, offenders could face up to one year in jail or a fine of RM5,000, or both.
“We will impound any vehicle found with such a device fitted. The owner will also be issued a fine and face court action in accordance with the law,” he said. “We will intensify enforcement and mount special operations to identify those who may have this device fitted on their vehicle.”
According to The Star, at least a dozen sellers are advertising these devices on the platforms. Upon checking, it was found that the sellers are mostly from overseas. Fortunately, no local sellers are offering this device on the e-commerce platforms. At the time of writing, pricing for the device ranges between RM140 and RM600.
Although the number plate is known to conceal the true identity of the vehicle, it is advertised as adding an extra layer of protection and security. “With the flip feature, you can conveniently hide or reveal your licence plate when needed, adding an extra layer of security and peace of mind,” a seller stated in the product description. Additionally, clear instructions are provided to make it easy for anyone to install the device.
Yusri stated that discussions with the Domestic Trade and Costs of Living and Digital ministries will be held regarding the sale of such devices. On the other hand, criminologist Datuk Seri A. Thaiveegan emphasised the danger of such devices and stressed that action should be taken to curb them immediately.
