Man, 54, arrested for smashing ATMs and cars in Pasir Gudang bank rampage

PASIR GUDANG, Sept 17 — Police arrested a 54-year-old man after he allegedly used a hoe to damage several automated teller machines (ATMs) and cash deposit machines (CDMs) at a bank in Taman Bukit Dahlia here yesterday.

The suspect is also being investigated for smashing the windows of several cars parked outside the bank during the 7.46am incident.

Seri Alam acting police chief Superintendent G Vikra Mathiththan @ Victor said police acted shortly after the incident was reported by a 56-year-old man, following the circulation of a video on social media.

“Acting on information, a team from the Seri Alam district police arrested a local man.

“Police also seized a hoe believed to have been used during the incident and 0.9 grammes of crystal methamphetamine (syabu) from the suspect,” he said in a statement today.

Vikra Mathiththan said the suspect had six prior records involving criminal and drug cases.

He added that the suspect also tested positive for methamphetamine during a drug test.

“The suspect has since been remanded for three days starting today,” he said.

Police have opened investigations under Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief, as well as Section 12(2) and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Yesterday, a 15-second video showing the damaged ATM and CDM inside the bank was widely shared on social media.
