KOTA KINABALU, Sept 17 — A Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) staff member is feared drowned after being swept away by strong currents while attempting to cross a flood-hit bridge at Kampung Nuntunan Apin-apin last night.
The victim, believed to be in his 30s, had been working at a nearby substation with two colleagues before the incident.
They reportedly tried to cross a concrete bridge in the area when sudden strong currents struck, causing them to panic. Two managed to reach the riverbank safely, while the victim briefly clung to a rope before losing his grip and being swept away.
Keningau Fire and Rescue Station chief Senior Fire Superintendent Severinus @ Mohd Nidzam Sainkui said they received a distress call at 9.57pm, and a team of nine personnel with a fire engine was deployed to the scene.
“The search and rescue operation is also joined by the Royal Malaysia Police and local villagers. Searches are currently focused along the riverbanks due to the strong currents,” he said.
As of 11.30pm, the victim had not been located.
In a statement, SESB confirmed the incident, saying one of its staff was involved while on duty.
“The victim is believed to have been swept away by strong currents while carrying out operational tasks. Rescue teams together with the relevant authorities have been mobilised and search efforts are actively ongoing.
“Our priority at this time is the safety and wellbeing of the staff involved, while extending full support to the victim’s family,” the company said.
SESB added that it will continue to work closely with the authorities and provide updates as the operation progresses.
