KOTA KINABALU: A man is feared drowned after being swept away by strong floodwaters while attempting to cross a bridge in Kampung Nuntunan Apin-apin, Keningau, on Tuesday night (Sept 16).
The victim, identified as Masdi Rasmin, in his 30s, was among three men, all believed to be Sabah Electricity workers, caught in the incident close to 10pm.
According to the Fire and Rescue Services Department, the men were trying to make their way across the bridge when they were struck by the sudden rush of water.
“Two of them managed to save themselves, but one victim was swept away. He was last seen wearing a Sabah Electricity vest,” a spokesperson said.
The Keningau fire station received the emergency call at 9.57pm, and a team of nine personnel, led by Norhasrita Abdul Manan, was dispatched to the scene, located about 26km from the station.
Firemen immediately launched a search and rescue (SAR) operation along the riverbanks. They gathered details from the survivors to piece together the chronology of events.
Operations were still ongoing late Tuesday night with the assistance of other agencies.
As of press time, the victim has yet to be located.
