KENINGAU: A Sabah Electricity staff member is feared drowned after being swept away by strong currents while crossing a flooded bridge at Kampung Nuntunan Apin-apin last night.
Rescue operations are underway.
The victim, a man in his 30s, and two of his colleagues had earlier carried out maintenance work at a substation near a suspension bridge.
They then attempted to cross a concrete bridge in the area but were suddenly hit by strong currents, causing panic among the three.
Two reached the riverbank, but the other lost his grip on a rope and was swept away by the raging current.
Keningau Fire and Rescue Station chief, Senior Fire Superintendent Severinus@Mohd Nidzam Sainkui, said his team received an emergency call at 9.57pm.
A rescue team comprising 9 firefighters, along with a fire engine and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle, was deployed to the location.
“The search and rescue (SAR) operation also involved the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and local villagers.
“Two victims managed to save themselves, while one has yet to be found. Search efforts are focused along the riverbanks due to the strong currents,” he said when contacted last night.
