PETALING JAYA:

The Sarawak government marked the 62nd Malaysia Day today by outlining key milestones in reclaiming the state’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

In officiating the state-level celebrations in Bintulu, Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg pointed to state-owned entity Petroleum Sarawak Berhad’s (Petros) role as Sarawak’s sole liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) aggregator as one of those landmark gains.

Abang Johari said other key achievements included the 2021 constitutional amendment which restored Sarawak’s status as an equal partner with West Malaysia in the federation, rather than just one of the states.

“These achievements show our seriousness in reclaiming Sarawak’s rights, but our struggle is not over. We will continue until every promise under MA63 is fulfilled for the people’s well-being,” he said, according to TVS.

Abang Johari said Malaysia Day could not be celebrated while ignoring MA63, which played a historically crucial role in Malaysia’s founding.

He reiterated that his Gabungan Parti Sarawak administration remained committed to and consistent about regaining the state’s rights under MA63, and ensuring that promises made under the agreement would be fully executed.

“Thankfully, through close cooperation with the federal government and under the leadership of Prime Minister Ibrahim, much progress has been made in restoring Sarawak’s rights,” he added.
