ALOR SETAR:

delegates have unanimously approved a resolution for the party to lead Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the 16th general election (GE16).

When presenting the motion earlier, PAS’s Youth wing representative Faizuddin Zai said the party needs to take over the opposition coalition’s leadership as it is now seen as being without any clear direction or focus.

“We have discussed the social and economic issues, as well as how to save our nation. But don’t forget that there is one more thing we must do before we face GE16.

“The people are waiting for us to seize PN’s leadership and uphold its struggle. Today, the people see PN as being weak and directionless,” he said.

Faizuddin said PAS can rejuvenate PN and send a signal to the people that the party is ready to lead the country.

On party president Abdul Hadi Awang’s statement that PN’s prime ministerial candidate should be a healthy person under 70 years old, Faizuddin said that was a signal that the position should be held by PAS.

“It is important for members to understand that the next prime minister must be a leader from this party,” he said.

Shah Alam PAS representative Sukri Omar, who supported the motion, said the proposal was made after taking into account PAS’s experience in national politics and the fact that the party has the most number of seats among PN component parties.

“We don’t want to seize (the PN leadership), but we want to be the main bulwark in restoring the people’s trust and confidence in PN.

“With the right captain and by fielding the proper candidates, God willing, we can come into power and form the government,” he said.

The muktamar accepted 46 motions for discussion and approval.
