ALOR STAR: Pas secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan has told Perikatan Nasional (PN) that all decisions on the coalition’s election strategies and prime ministerial candidacy must be reached through consensus.
Takiyuddin said Bersatu’s announcement of its president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as a prime minister candidate, as well as suggestions to retain the coalition logo in Kedah and Perlis during elections, were made outside the coalition’s collective decision-making process.
He added that Pas regarded all component parties in PN as equal partners, without any “big brother” role or hierarchy.
“For Pas, that statement (on the prime minister candidate and logo) was made ahead of PN’s decision. As a coalition of equal partners, no one can assume a smaller or bigger role, there is no ‘big brother’ here.
“Any decision, whether on the prime minister candidate or other matters, must go through the PN Supreme Council,” he told reporters after the conclusion of the 71st Pas Muktamar Assembly today.
On Sept 7, Bersatu’s annual general assembly unanimously endorsed Muhyiddin as the 11th prime minister candidate.
Yesterday, however, Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the party was ready to lead a multi-racial Malaysia while upholding the supremacy of the Federal Constitution.
Later, Muhyiddin said Pas had the right to propose its intention to lead PN and name its own prime minister candidate.
He also said he would prefer PN to contest in all states under the coalition’s logo instead of Pas’ in certain states.
However, the former prime minister said that it would ultimately be deliberated and decided by the PN Supreme Council.
