A PAS delegate has suggested that the government nationalise the production and supply of essentials such as cooking oil and rice to increase government revenue and make them affordable for all.
PAS ulama committee member Fawwaz Jan said the market for such essential items has been dominated by conglomerates for far too long.
“This way, we can reduce the reliance on pure taxation and the government’s revenue will increase.
“This would also make cooking oil, rice and other items cheaper,” he said at the party’s muktamar here today.
He was speaking in support of a call by a fellow delegate against the widening of the sales and service tax (SST).
The Permatang Pauh MP added that rare earth minerals should also come under the federal government’s purview, similar to Petronas’s role in petroleum exploration.
It was previously reported that the country’s rare earth element deposits are estimated to be worth RM745 billion.
