SIBU: One of Malaysia’s top cops has shown he can do more than enforce the law as he flips a roti canai with flair.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay delighted Malaysians after a video surfaced of him on holiday in Sibu, Sarawak, confidently tossing and stretching dough before serving up seven golden, crispy roti canai.
Roti canai, a beloved local flatbread, is often enjoyed with curry or dhal.
On a short break in Sibu, Ayob said he decided to step behind the counter at Curry House after finding the mamak’s roti canai flipping not quite to his liking.
“15 Sept 25 … My wife and I were on a short two-day break in Sibu. Last night we went for roti canai at Curry House Sibu Bus Terminal, but the way the mamak flipped it didn’t quite suit my taste. So, I took over.
“Made seven pieces for us to eat. Once in a while you’ve got to sharpen your skills too — I’m retiring soon,” he wrote, jokingly.
Demonstrating his skills as the crowd looked on, Ayob flipped the dough high into the air, slapped it onto the table with full concentration, tossed it over the hot plate and finally scooped it into a plate — all with the timing and precision of a seasoned cop with steady hands.
Ayob shared the moment in a video posted on his Facebook page.
The video, just over two minutes long, has racked up more than 72,000 views and over 8,000 likes, with netizens enjoying this lighter side of the country’s No. 2 cop.
Facebook user Md Yazid was impressed by his roti canai skills, writing: “Tan Sri’s flipping is top class… not awkward at all. A great man with a humble heart, may you be blessed with long life and good fortune, insya-Allah.”
Another user, Are Zull Are Azzurri, saluted Ayob for showing a more relaxed side despite his reputation as a firm and disciplined leader.
“Amazing to see Tan Sri Ayob Khan flipping roti canai himself… behind the strictness, honesty, integrity and sense of responsibility at work, there’s also a casual side. Salute, Tan Sri,” he wrote.
