SOFIA, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) — Bulgarian authorities have seized 739.180 kg of marijuana worth 7.1 million U.S. dollars at the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint on the country’s border with Türkiye, the National Customs Agency (NCA) said on Monday.
The illicit drug was discovered after a cargo composition consisting of a tractor and a semi-trailer with German registration arrived at the “Outgoing Freight Vehicles” lane of the checkpoint on Sept. 11, an hour before midnight, the NCA said.
Following a preliminary risk analysis, the vehicle was directed for physical control. During the subsequent inspection, 20 cardboard boxes and 22 textile bags wrapped in transparent and black foil were found in the front part of the cargo hold between the front wall and the declared cargo, containing 656 vacuum-packed packages of marijuana with a total weight of 739.180 kg.
“The quantity seized in this case is the largest found at Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint in the last 15 years,” the NCA said.
The driver of the vehicle, a 49-year-old Turkish citizen, was arrested. An investigation is underway.
