HULU : A 47-year-old man is feared to have drowned while bathing in Sungai Cherandong, Kampung Orang Asli Buloh Telur, here.

District police chief Superintendent Ibrahim Husin said a report was lodged at 12.45am by the victim’s younger brother, who believed his sibling had gone missing in the river.

The victim, who worked as a grass cutter, had been bathing with a friend before the incident occurred.

“Initial investigations found that the victim attempted to board a raft brought by his friend. He managed to hold onto the side of the raft but it was unclear whether he successfully boarded, as the incident happened at a river bend,” he said in a statement.

Rescue teams from the police, Fire and Rescue Department and other agencies arrived at 3am and conducted searches throughout the day.

As of 5pm, the victim had yet to be found, and the search resumed at 7.30pm.

Ibrahim reminded the public to be cautious when visiting picnic areas in Hulu .

“They must remain alert to their personal safety while spending time with family or friends to prevent any unwanted accidents,” he added.
