KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 — The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for Perlis, Kedah, Penang, parts of Perak, Johor, Sabah and Labuan until 12pm today.
In its 8.30am advisory, MetMalaysia said thunderstorms with heavy rain and strong winds are expected in Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak (Kerian, Larut, Matang dan Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar and Manjung), and Johor (Kluang, Mersing, Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Bahru).
In Sabah, the alert covers Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Keningau and Tambunan in the interior, and Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran and Kota Belud along the west coast, as well as Labuan.
MetMalaysia explained that such warnings are issued when there are signs of thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that are ongoing or expected to last for more than an hour.
The warnings are valid for periods of no longer than six hours.
