Compassionate aid of between RM1,000 and RM10,000 will be provided to those currently affected by the rainy season in Sabah to help ease their burden.
The Sabah state disaster management committee (JPBN) said in a statement that a cash aid of RM1,000 would be given to the head of each family moved to a relief centre.
A death benefit assistance of RM10,000 would be given to the heirs of victims who have lost their lives in disasters, Bernama reported.
“This assistance is given to Malaysians registered with the social welfare department. The government will also provide food baskets to all those affected,” the statement said here today.
The state government has obtained cooperation from the federal government, through the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), to channel financial assistance to those affected.
Additional Bailey bridges and other aid will also be provided.
The local authorities are actively carrying out monitoring, aid distribution and logistics coordination to ensure the safety and welfare of all victims.
Earlier, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had approved an immediate allocation of RM10 million through Nadma to assist flood victims in the state.
He said the amount is in addition to the RM11 million already channelled through the state government for urgent repairs of essential facilities in the affected areas.
JPBN said 863 people from 220 families had been evacuated up till this afternoon, compared with 415 people from 113 families reported this morning. The victims are from 36 villages in Penampang, Beaufort, Membakut and Tawau.
Nine people have been killed in two landslide incidents in Kota Kinabalu and Papar.
