Nearly 800 evacuated as floods worsen

PETALING JAYA:

The flood situation worsened this evening with nearly 800 people forced to flee their homes nationwide, with Sabah the worst hit.

Some 548 people in Penampang, Beaufort and Tawau had evacuated their homes due to floods as of 6pm, compared with 415 evacuees at 8am.

Perak, Negeri Sembilan and were also hit by floods, according to the Info Bencana portal.

A total of 105 flood evacuees in Muallim, Perak, are being housed in relief centres, followed by 79 in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, and 52 in Hulu Langat and Hulu in .

Earlier, Prime Minister Ibrahim approved an RM10 million allocation for flood victims in Sabah, on top of some RM11 million channelled through the state government.

He also ordered the federal government’s machinery to be mobilised to assist victims and to ensure aid reaches them without hindrance.

Heavy rain in Sabah has caused floods which also led to electricity and water cuts due to the shutdown of power stations and water treatment plants.

It also caused two landslides which have so far claimed at least nine lives.
