Penang set for a grand kick-off

BUTTERWORTH: For the first time, Penang will host the national-level Malaysia Day celebration, promising a colourful showcase of culture, unity and heritage.

Malaysians have been urged to join the event at the Penang International Convention, Cultural & Arts Centre @ Butterworth Arena tomorrow.

3521670The state secretary’s office said the event, themed “Rentas Perpaduan, Rentas Malaysia” (Unity Across Malaysia), reflects the nation’s spirit of togetherness, diversity and shared future.

“This is a proud moment for Penang as the host. The programme will not only feature performances and exhibitions but also reflect the true spirit of Malaysia Day to remember our history, celebrate our diversity and reinforce unity,” the office said.

The festivities will begin in the morning with cultural and community programmes to welcome guests.

These include performances by kompang troupes, Chinese drum ensembles, Indian traditional dancers, the Sikh community group and Penang’s signature boria theatre.

Visitors can also look forward to exhibitions and booths by government departments, non-governmental organisations and community groups, alongside food stalls and craft demonstrations showcasing Malaysia’s culinary and artistic traditions.

The National Archives will mount a special display chronicling the nation’s journey from independence to the present day, offering younger generations a chance to revisit pivotal chapters of Malaysian history.

“To keep the spirit inclusive, organisers have ensured that every community is represented in the line-up,” the office said, adding that youth groups, women’s associations and cultural organisations will also host activities promoting volunteerism, heritage preservation and environmental awareness.

The official celebration will begin at 8.30pm, featuring a parade, musical and dance performances, choir segments and multimedia presentations projecting Malaysia’s cultural diversity and aspirations.

National broadcaster RTM will provide live coverage, while organisers expect more than 12,000 visitors to attend throughout the day.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow called on Malaysians to join the historic celebration in Penang.

“This is a good opportunity to bring together people from all states, including Sabah and Sarawak, to celebrate an event that highlights cultural diversity.

“I believe this celebration will further strengthen the spirit of togetherness among the people of the peninsula, Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.

To facilitate crowd management, the public is encouraged to arrive early, dress decently and use public transport wherever possible.

Free shuttle services will be arranged from designated points in Seberang Perai, while traffic diversions are expected around the arena.

The Penang Port Commission will also provide free ferry services for Malaysians attending the celebration.

To enjoy the free rides on Sept 15 and 16, passengers only need to present their identity cards at the ferry counters.
