KUALA LUMPUR: A 26-year-old woman was killed when she was struck by a van while crossing the road in Jalan Kuchai Maju 13 here yesterday afternoon.
City Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the incident occurred about 12.30pm.
He said the van was driven by a 25-year-old local man.
“Initial investigations found that the accident happened when the van driver exited a T-junction and hit the pedestrian, who was crossing the road near the junction,” he said in a statement.
He added that the victim was confirmed dead at the scene by medical officers from Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
The driver of the van was uninjured.
Zamzuri said the case is being investigated under under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Anyone found guilty under the section is liable to a jail term of not less than two years and not more than 10 years and to a fine of between RM5,000 and RM20,000.
