KOTA KINABALU:

Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor convened an emergency meeting today on the major power outage affecting districts in the east coast since yesterday.

The chief minister’s department said in a statement that Hajiji and other officials were briefed by Sabah Electricity chief operating officer Yusmanizam Yusof.

Yusmanizam said a power line was cut when a 275kV tower was swept away by a landslide in Kampung Kolopis, Penampang.

He reported that the Sabah Electricity crisis team has been mobilised and is currently implementing the reconnection of the Kolopis-Segaliud power line. Weather permitting, power connection works could be completed within two days, the statement said.

Hajiji acknowledged the challenging nature of the restoration works. “I understand the precarious nature of the restoration works, and while we hope it can be completed quickly, at the same time, I want them to exercise caution too,” he said.

The chief minister had also instructed Sabah Electricity to maintain regular public updates on work progress and to continuously monitor the situation due to the prevailing inclement weather conditions in the affected areas.

The other officials at the meeting included state secretary Safar Untong, who is also director of the state disaster management committee, and the Sabah director of the National Security Council, Yahya Sulaiman.
