SHAH ALAM, Sept 14 (Bernama) — Selangor Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi has revealed that he received a threatening email, with an extortion video from an unknown account, displaying a screenshot of a video edited using artificial intelligence (AI) technology with his face superimposed.
He said in the email he received two days ago (Friday), he was also blackmailed and asked to pay US$100,000 (RM420,000) to prevent the video from going viral.
Following this, he lodged a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for further investigation into the misuse of AI technology and the attempt to spread slander through the dissemination of pornographic videos.
“My side too will lodge a police report so that a thorough investigation can be conducted regarding the threats behind this email,” he said in a statement today.
Mohd Najwan believes the mastermind behind this threat is using the same modus operandi as in the video extortion threats involving former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, Subang member of parliament (MP) Wong Chen and Sungai Petani MP Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari.
“Therefore, I urge the public to be vigilant against any form of fraud or threats via the internet,” he said.
“The spread of such false and defamatory content not only tarnishes the dignity of individuals but also threatens the safety and harmony of society.”
