PETALING JAYA:

Communications minister Fadzil said he too received threatening emails demanding US$100,000 to prevent the release of fake AI-generated sex videos.

The government spokesman said the message he received had the same wording and fake screenshots like those sent to other politicians in the past few days. The emails are believed to have originated from the same email address.

said the government takes a serious view of the incidents and will not tolerate any party that misuses technology and communication networks to threaten or deceive the public.

“Every effort will be made to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice to safeguard public safety,” he said in a Facebook post.

Fahmi said so far, the other politicians who received the emails were Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli, Subang MP Wong Chen, Sungai Petani MP Dr Taufiq Johari, Hang Tuah Jaya MP Adam Adli, Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin, Kota Anggerik assemblyman Najwan Halimi, Seri Setia assemblyman Fahmi Ngah, Kulim assemblyman Wong Chia Zen, and Senator Manolan Mohamad.

Fahmi said offensive communications with intent to threaten is an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.

He said the incidents can also be investigated for criminal intimidation under Section 503 of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to two years, a fine, or both.

In a separate statement, Wong said his office received an email on Friday containing a menacing message, a screenshot of a purported sex video with his face digitally inserted, and a QR code demanding payment of US$100,000.

Wong, who said he had discussed the email with Rafizi, noted that it might not be a coincidence that both MPs were targeted on the same day.

“Other than our faces, both photos are identical … from the fold of the pillows and blanket, to the room, the bed and the naked person in the photo.

“In other words, the same person had attempted to blackmail both of us, but separately,” he said.
