KOTA KINABALU, Sept 14 — A total of seven landslides have been reported in Kampung Kopungit, Kepayan, here since yesterday, resulting in damage to two houses.
Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue Station chief Ordine Gilu (HE) said the station received a report from the Kampung Kopungit Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) on the situation today and subsequently conducted an inspection with other relevant agencies.
He said officers from the Sabah Minerals and Geosciences Department found that the soil structure in the area was unstable.
“If the rainy weather continues, the area remains at high risk of further landslides, which could endanger the safety of residents.
“The Fire and Rescue Department, together with the agencies involved, has instructed two affected families to move to the Kampung Kopungit Village Hall. Continuous monitoring is being carried out, and updates will be provided as needed,” he said when contacted today.
Resident Mazlan Dullah, 37, expressed deep concern for the safety of his family and neighbours, saying that every time it rains, residents feel anxious.
“We have not been able to sleep well since the landslide yesterday. Every time it rains, our hearts race because we are afraid another landslide might occur,” said the father of two.
Meanwhile, shop assistant Rahmah Kitin, 45, urged the authorities to find a long-term solution, as many residents are reluctant to move since the area is their ancestral land.
“We are not rich and cannot afford to buy a new house,” said the mother of five. — Bernama
