KUANTAN: A worker was reported trapped in a rockfall at a quarry in Ulu Gali, Sungai Ruan, Raub, on Saturday (Sept 13).

Raub Police chief Supt Mohd Shahril Abdul Rahman said the victim, Mohammad Fazrul Illahi Ab Rahman, 30, from Tanah Merah, , was operating an excavator when he was struck by falling rocks from a nearby hillside at about 12.50pm.

“The victim is believed to have jumped out of the machine he was operating before being struck and buried by rocks. The affected area is estimated to cover a radius of 300m, while the depth is still unknown,” he said in a statement on Saturday.

He said three other foreign workers escaped with minor injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Raub Hospital.

Mohd Shahril said the search and rescue (SAR) operation involving the police, the Fire and Rescue Department and several other agencies faced difficulties on Saturday due to ongoing ground movement at the site.

“The Fire and Rescue Department has requested the assistance of the K9 Unit, which is expected to begin searching for the victim today. The SAR operation on the first day was halted at about 7.30pm due to darkness,” he said.

He said the SAR operation resumed at 8am on Sunday (Sept 14). – Bernama
