Fuiyoh! Uncle Roger ties the knot with best friend

KUALA LUMPUR: Nigel Ng, better known to millions as Uncle Roger, has tied the knot with his best friend, Miami-born lawyer Sabrina Ahmed, in a lavish three-day wedding celebration in Sintra, Portugal.

According to Vogue, the Malaysian-born comedian and restaurateur marked the occasion with a fusion of Chinese, Bengali and Western traditions. The festivities included a sunset cruise, a sangeet, a tea ceremony and a grand reception.

“We saw ourselves reflected in Portugal’s aesthetic landscape. There is an elegant interweaving of Chinese, Islamic and Indian influences — most notably in the iconic blue-and-white azulejos, whose patterns were inspired by Chinese porcelain and echo motifs from Rajasthani and Moorish tilework,” Sabrina said of their chosen wedding destination.

The couple donned four meaningful outfits across the celebrations, using their clothing and jewellery to symbolise both their heritage and their love story.

Their romance began in 2022, when Sabrina, then a corporate lawyer for a luxury resort real estate developer in Miami, attended one of the company’s property shows where Ng was performing.

“He (my friend) described Nigel as a guy who ‘jokes about rice’, which didn’t sound that compelling. But after I started watching his show, I realised he was hilarious and, beyond the glare of the orange shirt, actually very cute,” she recalled.

Although Sabrina was facing family health issues at the time, fate intervened when Ng appeared as one of the first profiles on a dating app she joined. The comedian, instantly captivated by her “elegance and beauty”, offered to fly her to Boston to meet.

“We met at Boston Airport on Nov 11, 2022 at Terminal 3, when our flights, originally scheduled hours apart, both ended up landing at exactly 3pm. Everything felt destined and effortless. I was full of anticipation that week, and when I finally saw her, she was even more stunning in person and so easy to talk to,” Ng said.

By March 2023, Ng was certain Sabrina was the one. He admired her independence, while she valued his quiet devotion to family. The couple soon relocated to London and, a year later, he proposed under cherry blossoms in Tokyo — a gesture that reflected Sabrina’s love of flowers.

Ng announced the wedding on Facebook with his trademark humour, writing: “Now someone please help my uncle find a wife.” The post, which drew more than 2,000 comments, was flooded with congratulatory messages.
