GEORGE TOWN, Sept 13 (Bernama) — Newly elected Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) president Datuk Dr Thirunavukarasu Rajoo has pledged to empower doctors in their leadership roles, advocate for fair policies, and reclaim professional autonomy.
He also stressed that issues ranging from general practitioner (GP) fees, contract positions, and third-party administrator practices to medico-legal reforms must be addressed to restore fairness and sustainability.
“Doctors must not only be present at the decision-making table, but meaningfully engaged. Our expertise must shape policy, not merely endorse it. Symbolic inclusion without influence weakens both trust and outcomes.
“We are healers, advocates, educators, innovators and leaders. Together, we will advocate for our profession, safeguard our patients, and shape a healthcare system worthy of Malaysia’s future,” he said in his inaugural address at the MMA’s Annual Banquet held here today, which was officiated by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.
He also commended Dr Dzulkefly for his steadfast efforts in advocating for the medical profession, particularly in tackling the contract doctor issue, introducing Medical Act amendments on specialist recognition, promoting digitalisation and advancing public health initiatives.
Dr Thirunavukarasu officially took over from Datuk Dr Kalwinder Singh Khaira and will serve a one-year term as head of the country’s largest doctors’ group.
