KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg has assured that operations at the liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities in Bintulu remain secure despite a circulating threatening message.
According to a Borneo Post report, Abang Johari said no incidents had been reported, and authorities were continuing to monitor the situation closely.
“Although the situation is under control and there is no danger at present, we are continuing to monitor developments on the ground,” he said after visiting the Tabuan Jaya police housing complex.
Abang Johari said the threat was received via a message sent to a Petronas staff member, prompting immediate action.
“The issue with social media is whether the information is true or not. These threats are very subjective; some come in the form of slander or speculation. Be that as it may, we remain vigilant,” he said.
The premier said additional security measures were being implemented in Bintulu, including the establishment of a naval base and a new army battalion.
Later in the afternoon, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail confirmed that investigations were ongoing to trace the source of the threat.
He said that the phone number linked to the message was registered in Indonesia and said that the police were working with Indonesian authorities to investigate.
“To address this, we have also increased security. I have instructed all contingent police headquarters nationwide to tighten security at Petronas facilities,” he said.
