KUCHING, Sept 13 — The situation at liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities in Bintulu remains under control, Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg assured today.

He stressed that no incidents had occurred following the receipt of a threatening message.

“Although the situation is under control and there is no danger at present, we are continuing to monitor what’s going on the ground.

“The LNG facility threat was a threat sent via a message received by a Petronas staff member, so we will not rest on our laurels; when we received the message, we immediately stayed alert.

“The issue with social media is whether the information is true or not. These threats are very subjective, some come in the form of slander or speculation. Be that as it may, we remain vigilant,” he told reporters after visiting the Tabuan Jaya police housing complex here today.

He added that security measures in Bintulu are being strengthened, including through the establishment of a naval base and a new army battalion.

Later in the afternoon, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said investigations are ongoing to identify the suspect behind the threatening message.

He said the number was registered in Indonesia, and as such, he said the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) is working with the Indonesian police to investigate.

“To address this, we have also increased security. I have instructed all contingent police headquarters nationwide to tighten security at Petronas facilities,” he said.

Also present at the event were Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah and Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata. — The Borneo Post
