Uruguay Assessing Accepting Gaza Refugees, Stresses Commitment To Peace

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 (Bernama) — Uruguay’s move to consider accepting Palestinian refugees from Gaza is underpinned by Montevideo’s longstanding commitment to peace and human rights, said Charge d’Affaires of the Uruguayan Embassy in Malaysia L. Mariela Machado.

She said Uruguay is globally recognised for consistently advocating peace in multilateral platforms such as the United Nations.

“Uruguay is the one always that is going to try to go for peace. Uruguay is always, in any case, especially because human rights in Uruguay are part of our national flag.

“So in that sense, Uruguay goes always to the places, especially in the multilateral spaces such United Nations. Uruguay is always trying to get to the peace space. So for us, this is something very important,” she told Bernama here, Friday.

Machado was responding to media reports quoting Uruguayan Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin as confirming that the country is ‘seriously’ and ‘very carefully’ assessing the possibility of accepting Palestinian refugees from Gaza.

Lubetkin stressed that while many families had reached out to Uruguayan embassies for help, the process remained ‘highly complicated’ as it required authorisation from Israel and the involvement of humanitarian organisations such as the Red Cross.

More than 64,756 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip since Oct 7, 2023, with an additional 164,059 people having sustained injuries, a majority of them women and children. The ensuing blockade and ongoing Israeli military operations have pushed the enclave into a severe humanitarian crisis.
