ALOR STAR: Pas Youth has called on the party to prepare itself to lead Perikatan Nasional (PN) and put forward a prime minister candidate based on its current political strength.
The call was made through a motion tabled by Pas Youth information chief Khairul Nadzir Helmi Azhar during the 66th Pas Youth Muktamar at the Kedah Pas Complex here today.
He said the motion underlined that Pas now holds a significant position in national politics and should rightfully take the lead role in PN.
“Beyond current political achievements, Pas’ seniority as the oldest party, with nearly 74 years of experience since 1951, provides a strong foundation of legitimacy, stability and administrative capacity to lead the country.
“With experience governing major states, a strong grassroots machinery, as well as consistency in ideology and Islamic struggle, Pas has demonstrated its readiness not only as a coalition partner, but as the core party capable of offering a credible and experienced prime minister candidate.
“This motion serves to affirm Pas’ position, boost grassroots confidence, and send a clear signal to both allies and rivals that Pas is ready to play a leading role in shaping the country’s future leadership,” he said during the debate session.
The motion was later passed unanimously and will be tabled at the 71st Pas Annual Muktamar, which begins next Monday, for further debate and refinement.
Khairul Nadzir said Pas must strengthen its machinery at all levels to take over PN leadership, with emphasis on key aspects including strategic election management and more systematic seat mapping.
He added that comprehensive policy research to address current issues, effective mass communication to explain Islamic policies and Pas’ role within PN, as well as the mobilisation of youth and professional activists as new forces, must be given serious attention.
“Pas is also urged to put forward a prime minister candidate from among its leadership during official negotiations with PN components as a symbol of maturity and readiness for political leadership.
“This proposal is based on Pas’ achievements, including 43 parliamentary seats, control of strategic states in the East Coast and northern peninsula, as well as in conservative states with significant Muslim demographics, along with successes in state elections in Kelantan, Kedah and Terengganu,” he said.
He added that Pas’ victories in these states reflect a strong mandate from the people, further strengthening the argument that the party is qualified to lead the nation and put forward a credible prime minister candidate.
