The Terengganu Football Association (TFA) will call up the organiser of a state legislative assembly league match after supporters threw fireworks and lit flares at Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium on Wednesday night.
TFA president Hishamuddin Abdul Karim said the incident should never have happened, as it could have injured spectators and players, Bernama reported.
He said that while the tournament was not held under TFA’s management, the association would still seek a report and advise organisers, warning that such incidents can damage the image of football in the state.
“The organiser should have lodged a police report regarding the incident so the police can investigate and prevent violence from occurring in public places.
“Organisers of football or any other sports events are advised to enhance their SOPs and security control for matches,” Hishamuddin, who is also the state youth and sports development and NGO committee chairman said.
Video clips, which went viral, showed supporters throwing fireworks and flares during a match between Tanjung Sabtu FC and Paya Datu FC.
The referee, assistant referees and players were forced to flee, causing the match to be abandoned in the 82nd minute.
