, Sept 12 (Bernama) — The government will roll out a new renewable energy (RE) initiative using building rooftops, called the Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (Solar ATAP), starting Dec 1.

The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) in a statement today, stated that the programme is a continuation of the Net Energy Metering (NEM) initiative, which ended on June 30.

It said the programme is guided by several key principles, including retaining the core concept of NEM, which allows excess energy to be sold to the grid as an offset, with adjustments to make it more attractive than the Solar for Self-Consumption (SelCo) scheme.

The energy offset rate will be based on the market electricity price, or system marginal price (SMP), similar to the NEM NOVA programme, to ensure long-term sustainability.

The solar system installation limit has been set at up to 100 per cent of maximum demand, enabling users to optimise solar power for their consumption.

“Programme guidelines and the registration system will be available from Dec 1, 2025, and can be accessed via the Energy Commission and SEDA Malaysia websites,” it said.

The statement said the rollout of Solar ATAP is expected to drive the growth of distributed generation in the national power supply system, while offering consumers more options to utilise their rooftop space.

The ministry said it is confident the new initiative will help the nation reach its goal of 70 per cent RE capacity in electricity supply by 2050, in line with the Malaysia MADANI principles.
