BTH: Israel strikes Qatar, Gaza flotilla & AG-prosecutor split

KUALA LUMPUR: This week, Beyond the Headlines focuses on two dramatic developments that shook global diplomacy and humanitarian efforts surrounding the Gaza war.

First, Israel struck in an unprecedented location — Doha, Qatar — where Hamas representatives were reportedly discussing a US backed ceasefire plan.

Five people were killed, including the son of a Hamas leader.

The strike not only escalates tensions but also undermines Qatar’s central role as mediator.

Moscow and Ankara blasted the attack as a sovereignty breach, while London urged an urgent ceasefire. Analysts warn it could complicate US’ interests, since Qatar hosts a key American air base.

Then, far from the Gulf, another flashpoint — the Global Sumud Flotilla. The civilian-led convoy from more than 44 countries hopes to break Israel’s maritime blockade and deliver aid to Gaza.

But in Tunisia, one of its vessels was damaged in what organisers called a drone strike. They accused Israel; Tunisian authorities denied it, blaming an internal fire.

NST senior editor Azman Hamid and counter-terrorism analyst Dr. Ahmad El Muhammady joined to share their insights.

In Malaysia, the Cabinet has decided to separate the roles of Attorney-General and public prosecutor, marking a significant step in institutional reform.
