PETALING JAYA:

A student whose story was widely shared online in July for punching his male teacher changed his plea in the Kajang magistrates’ court to not guilty today.

Kosmo reported that the 14-year-old boy’s lawyer S Priyatha informed reporters of this after the case was mentioned before magistrate Fatin Dayana Jalil during closed proceedings.

“The court has set Oct 9 for re-mention of the case and handover of documents.

“We will wait for the documents from the prosecution before deciding whether to submit a representation or take other actions,” she said.

Today had previously been set for sentencing and submission of the report of conduct from the social welfare department, but the accused changed his plea after the charge was reread to him.

The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Siti Nur Alia Safri. The court allowed bail of RM1,000 with one surety.

The teenager was charged with voluntarily causing hurt to his 29-year-old male teacher at a secondary school in Kajang at 4.48pm on July 28.

He had reportedly punched his teacher in the face after being scolded for skipping classes.

He was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to a year’s imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000 or both if convicted.
