GEORGE TOWN, Sept 11 — Private jetties in Penang will soon be required to apply for licences under the Penang Port Commission (PPC).

PPC chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said there are currently 38 private jetties under the commission’s jurisdiction in the state.

He said the PPC, in collaboration with Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB), regularly monitors private jetties operating within port limits.

“Most of these are used by fishermen while some are used for handling commodities other than seafood,” he said in a statement today.

Yeoh said proactive measures are now being taken to engage jetty owners and explain requirements and operational guidelines.

“This initiative will be carried out in close cooperation with the Malaysian Customs Department as well as other relevant government departments and agencies,” he said.

Engagement sessions will also be held with jetty owners to ensure all parties’ needs are considered.

“This is to allow for comprehensive licenses to be issued,” he said.

Yeoh said he is confident the initiative will help strengthen port regulations and safeguard maritime security within Penang Port limits.

“PPC will continue to strengthen its role as a regulatory body to implement various strategic measures to ensure smooth, safe, and compliant maritime operations,” he said.

He added that the PPC not only functions as a port resource centre, port authority, trade facilitator and free commercial zone administrator, but also carries the responsibility of regulating all activities within port jurisdiction.
