KUCHING: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg has praised Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for successfully elevating Malaysia’s image on the international stage through a diplomatic approach that emphasises peace and national sovereignty.
He said the prime minister had played a key role in helping to resolve issues involving Cambodia-Thailand relations, thus proving Malaysia’s commitment as a defender of peace.
“Yang Amat Berhormat himself has raised Malaysia’s diplomatic standard because when he managed to help, even in part, resolve the Cambodia-Thailand issue, the world recognised that peace is his ultimate objective.
“I heard what happened in Qatar was blatant, disregarding the sovereignty of nations and the peace we advocate.
“Therefore, we feel that Yang Amat Berhormat has elevated our image as a fighter for peace at the international level,” he said when speaking at a dinner with the community in conjunction with Anwar‘s working visit to Sarawak, here, tonight.
Israeli forces attacked Doha on Tuesday, allegedly targeting Hamas political leaders who were believed to be meeting on a United States-backed Gaza ceasefire proposal.
The attack in the Leqtaifiya area, involving about 15 fighter jets, killed six people, including the son of senior Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya, his office director, and a Qatari security officer, while top Hamas leaders reportedly survived.
Also present at the event tonight were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Sarawak deputy premiers Datuk Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, as well as federal and state ministers.
