The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) has served a Facebook user with a show cause notice over a post she made last week regarding the inquest into the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir.
The AGC said the notice was served on Che Muna Din yesterday as a first step towards the initiation of committal proceedings against her for contempt of court.
It said the posting on Sept 4 had questioned the evidence given by expert witness Dr Jessie Hiu, a consultant forensic pathologist, and could influence public views while disrupting inquest proceedings.
The AGC also said charges would be filed soon against several other people who made statements regarding the inquest into Zara’s death which could disrupt the proceedings.
“This department views any action that can hinder the administration of justice seriously and will not hesitate to take stern action under the law.
“We remind the public not to upload, comment on or spread social media postings that can cause confusion or disrupt ongoing court proceedings,” it said in a statement.
Zara, 13, died on July 17 at Queen Elizabeth Hospital where she was admitted a day after being found unconscious near her school’s hostel in Papar, Sabah.
The AGC ordered that her remains be exhumed for a post-mortem on Aug 8 before announcing a formal inquest on Aug 13.
The sixth day of the inquest commenced today with the presiding coroner, sessions court judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan, leading an inspection of the dormitory at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha.
