Death Toll From Floods On Bali Holiday Island Rises To Nine, Six Missing

JAKARTA, Sept 11 (Bernama) — Severe flooding on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali has killed nine people, with six still missing and more than 600 affected, the country’s disaster agency said.

The flooding has struck six regencies and municipalities, namely Denpasar, Jembrana, Gianyar, Klungkung, Badung, and Tabanan, National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) head Suharyanto said.

He noted that the floods were triggered by Rossby and Kelvin waves, tropical weather patterns that can unleash torrential rain and cause damage to homes and infrastructure.

“As of 9 pm local time on Wednesday, water levels in several rivers have returned to normal. This flooding was caused by extremely intense rainfall,” Suharyanto stated.

Search and rescue operations were ongoing Thursday with 400 to 600 personnel deployed to locate the missing and clear debris.

Teams were also pumping out stagnant water from Badung Market’s car park and removing piles of rubble.

Suharyanto said his inspection of the area underscored the government’s rapid response to the disaster.

President Prabowo Subianto has ordered emergency services to step up rescue efforts and ensure the swift delivery of aid.
