MELAKA, Sept 10 (Bernama) — Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail today hosted ASEAN ministers and delegates on a river cruise along Sungai Melaka, held as a sideline programme of the 19th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC).
The participants, who included ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn, Home Affairs Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Awang Alik Jeman and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, embarked on four boats from Pangkalan Rama jetty between 5.45 pm and 6 pm.
Also joining the evening outing were AMMTC officials from ASEAN member states, Timor-Leste as well as dialogue partner China, Japan and South Korea.
The 45 to 55-minute round trip took delegates past Melaka’s iconic riverside attractions, showcasing heritage shoplots, colourful murals, bridges and modern landmarks that reflect the state’s blend of history and vibrancy.
The cruise concluded with the boats returning to Pangkalan Rama at about 6.40 pm, followed by a welcoming dinner at the Riverbank Floating Cafe Mendam Berahi, where the guests continued to enjoy Melaka’s famed hospitality.
Delegates were also treated to a durian feast, which offers them a taste of Malaysia’s king of fruits in a riverside setting.
The Melaka River, once a bustling maritime trade route during the Malacca Sultanate, has now become one of the state’s premier attractions, offering visitors a chance to relive the city’s historical charm while enjoying its modern transformation.
Melaka has become the regional focal point this week as ASEAN ministers and senior officials responsible for security and law enforcement gather from Sept 8 to 12 for the 19th AMMTC and its related meetings.
The five-day programme focuses on enhancing regional cooperation to tackle various transboundary crime threats.
The 19th AMMTC and related meetings are being held in conjunction with Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2025 under the theme ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’, reflecting the country’s commitment to building a safer and more prosperous ASEAN community.
