KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 (Bernama) — The Dewan Negara, which had been in session for 10 days since Aug 25, was adjourned sine die today.
During the course of the sitting, the Senate passed 19 bills, including the Gig Workers Bill 2025, the Government Procurement Bill 2025, the Offenders Compulsory Attendance (Amendment) Bill 2025, the National Registration (Amendment) Bill 2025, the Education Bill (Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Atomic Energy Licensing (Amendment) Bill 2025, as well as the motion on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).
The sitting also saw three appointed senators take their oath of office: youth activist and PKR Rembau division chief Dr Jufitri Joha; DAP Central Executive Committee member Datuk Wu Him Ven; and DAP veteran Datuk Leong Ngah Ngah.
Meanwhile, the Dewan Negara president Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah, in his closing speech, said that the sitting also saw the Special Select Committee on Law Review table a report examining 10 bills, reflecting the committee’s ongoing efforts to assist senators in performing their legislative functions more comprehensively.
“The committee’s active participation in conducting research, studies, and observations, as well as providing recommendations through statements, demonstrates that the Dewan Negara is not merely a forum for debate, but also plays a strategic role in the process of drafting the country’s laws,” he said.
In addition, Awang Bemee expressed hope that the senators participating in the 46th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), from Sept 16 to 22, would be able to share knowledge and best practices in strengthening cooperation among ASEAN parliaments.
He also extended his appreciation to two senators who will be completing their first term of office – Senator Datuk Ros Suryati Alang and Senator Tan Sri Dr Mohamed Haniffa Abdullah – both will conclude their terms on Sept 26.
The Dewan Negara was then adjourned sine die.
