KUCHING, Sept 10 — A 35-year-old man who threatened to kill his mother after she refused to give him RM20 was sentenced to 12 months in jail by the Magistrates’ Court here today.
Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali convicted Joseph Sumbang after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, which carries a jail term of up to seven years, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
He committed the offence at a house in Sungai Apong Resettlement Scheme at around 11.15am on September 6.
Based on the facts of the case, Joseph ran amok and acted aggressively during a verbal argument with his mother.
He also struck a cupboard and the house door while under the influence.
The incident arose when his mother refused to give him RM20, as she did not want him to buy drugs.
Angered by this, Joseph threatened to kill her prior to retreating into a bedroom.
Fearing for her safety, his mother immediately left the house with her second child and lodged a police report, which led to Joseph’s arrest later that same day at 6.49pm.
Investigations revealed that Joseph had terrorised his mother by going on a rampage and threatening to kill her, with the threat also heard by his sibling.
Deputy public prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng handled the prosecution, while Joseph was unrepresented by legal counsel. — The Borneo Post
