No Malaysians 'affected' in Doha explosion

KUALA LUMPUR: No Malaysians were involved in yesterday’s explosion in Qatar’s capital, the Malaysian embassy in Doha said Wednesday.

“So far, no Malaysians have been reported affected by the incident. However, Malaysians in Qatar are advised to remain vigilant and to avoid the affected area, the embassy said.

The embassy also said the Qatari Foreign Ministry had confirmed that the blast was caused by an Israeli strike targeting the Hamas leader’s office in the Legtaifiya area of Doha.

Israel struck the headquarters of Hamas’ political leadership in Qatar on Tuesday.

Israel has long threatened to target Hamas leaders wherever they are.

The attack drew condemnation from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and the European Union, and risks derailing Gaza ceasefire talks and efforts to reach a negotiated end to the nearly two-year-old conflict.

Hamas said five of its members had been killed in the attack, including the son of Hamas’s exiled Gaza chief and top negotiator Khalil al-Hayya. It said Israel had failed in what Hamas called an attempt to assassinate the group’s ceasefire negotiation team.

The air strike came after Israel warned Palestinians to leave Gaza City — once home to about a million people — as it seeks to destroy what remains of Hamas, which has been severely weakened by Israeli forces since October 2023.
