RANAU, Sept 9 (Bernama) — A determined group of 10 women journalists from various media agencies in Kuala Lumpur, all of whom are members of the Malaysian Women Journalists Association (PERTAMA), set out today on an inspiring expedition to scale Mount Kinabalu, Southeast Asia’s highest peak.
The group, comprising journalists from the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), Berita Harian, Utusan Malaysia, Harian Metro, Malaysiakini and Media Selangor, began their ascent at 8.30 am, braving the rugged trails with the aim of reaching the summit before returning to the Timpohon Gate by tomorrow afternoon.
This marks the largest-ever group of women media personnel in Malaysia to undertake the climb to this iconic 4,095-meter summit.
PERTAMA president Sariha Mohd Ali, a Senior News Editor of Berita Harian, shared her gratitude for the special climbing permit granted in April, making the expedition possible.
“Although time constraints limited our training sessions, the unwavering spirit of the participants is truly inspiring. I hope this climb becomes a catalyst for their continued dedication to the challenging world of journalism,” she said.
The expedition is supported strategically by Malaysia Airlines and Takaful Malaysia.
Meanwhile, Sabah Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Shahelmey Yahaya expressed pride in the courage and tenacity of the women journalists, noting that the expedition not only symbolises their personal strength but also helps to promote this renowned natural landmark to a wider audience.
“Despite their busy daily schedules reporting news, these women committed to fitness training and mental preparation for this physically demanding journey. I admire their determination,” he said during a meeting with the climbers and PERTAMA committee members at his office yesterday.
Shahelmy said that the climb to conquer Mount Kinabalu would test more than just physical endurance; it also demands mental strength and teamwork among the climbers.
“Reaching the summit is more than a personal achievement. It symbolises the strength and solidarity of these women journalists, inspiring others that women can rise to great challenges both professionally and personally.
“And of course, the breathtaking natural scenery and the collective encouragement among the climbers through harsh weather, steep paths, and fatigue will become unforgettable memories,” he said.
The group’s journey not only highlights their personal grit but also underscores the growing presence and resilience of women in Malaysia’s media landscape, balancing demanding careers with extraordinary feats of endurance.
Mount Kinabalu, or better known as ‘Aki Nabalu’ in the Kadazandusun language, which means ‘ancestor mountain’, is located in the Ranau district, approximately 100 kilometres east of Kota Kinabalu.
