BUTTERWORTH: A Vietnamese man has been fined RM20,000 and sentenced to eight months in jail by the Magistrate’s Court here after pleading guilty to five charges, including causing hurt to two men and a baby.
Nguyen Minh Hoa, 36, made the plea before Magistrate Aini Adilah Muhammad Faizal after the charges were read out to him in Vietnamese.
On the first and second charges, the man was charged with voluntarily causing hurt to two men, a local and a Nepali, using a knife at a supermarket in Telaga Air here at 1pm on Aug 9.
On the third count, he was charged with attempting to cause injury to an 11-month-old boy using a knife at the same location and time.
The three charges were framed under Section 324 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 511 of the same law, which provides imprisonment for up to 10 years or a fine or whipping or any two of the punishments upon conviction.
For the fourth charge, the man was charged with stealing prawns, crabs, clams, fish and chicken worth RM180 belonging to the supermarket at 12.35 pm on Aug 9.
The charge was framed under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which provides imprisonment for up to 10 years or a fine or whipping upon conviction.
The last charge was for overstaying in the country for nine months and 22 days without a reasonable excuse, an offence under Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and punishable under Section 15(4) of the same Act, following the expiry of his visit pass on Oct 18, 2024.
Nguyen Minh Hoa, unrepresented, was fined a total of RM20,000 for the first to the third charges, in default a total of 23 months imprisonment, while for the fourth charge, he was sentenced to three months in prison, to be served from the date of arrest, and on the fifth charge, to five months in prison to be served from the date of conviction. – Bernama
