KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said precautionary measures have been taken following a reported threatening text message sent to a Petronas employee, with the National Security Council (NSC) instructing security forces to tighten safety protocols at all LNG facilities in Sabah and Sarawak.
He said the police are currently investigating the source of the message to identify the individual behind the threat.
“I was informed that one of the Petronas staff at the headquarters received a threatening SMS.
“It was sent from a phone number registered in Indonesia. However, the identity of the sender is still under police investigation,” he told reporters after launching the National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security and the Asean Women, Peace and Security Summit 2025, here today.
Yesterday, the NSC ordered all LNG facilities in Bintulu to tighten security following a reported but unspecified threat.
The NSC, in a statement, said the directive was issued to allow authorities to conduct a detailed investigation into the matter.
Elaborating on the threat, Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said the sender had initially demanded a response regarding an unspecified issue, and when there was none, issued a threat to burn down an LNG facility.
“They asked for a response to something, but when there was no reply, they threatened to set fire to one of our LNG facilities.
However, it’s unclear which LNG facility was being referred to — whether it’s in Bintulu or Sabah — as the message only mentioned ‘LNG’ in general terms.”
He said precautionary measures have been taken, and the NSC has instructed security forces to tighten safety protocols at all LNG facilities in both Sabah and Sarawak.
Bintulu is home to Malaysia’s largest LNG complex and is a key hub for the nation’s energy exports.
In a statement, Petronas confirmed that its LNG operations in Bintulu remain unaffected, with no disruption to supply.
The company also said it is taking the threat seriously and is working closely with the authorities to assess and address the situation.
