PETALING JAYA:

A DAP leader today said that Bersatu president Yassin was simply facing the consequences of his previous political manoeuvres, following moves from within his own party to topple him.

Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali, a DAP central executive committee member, said signature drives and statutory declarations calling for to step down should come as no surprise.

“Muhyiddin only needs to sit back, reflect, and evaluate himself: remember the Sheraton Move, which he helped orchestrate, leading to the power in March 2020.

“This, despite the fact that he himself was part of the government formed in 2018,” he said in a statement today.

The Johor DAP deputy chairman also accused Muhyiddin of “stabbing his PH allies in the back” and said it was unrealistic for him to now expect loyalty from his Bersatu colleagues.

“Moreover, Muhyiddin’s allies themselves have a track record of withdrawing parliamentary support, even to the point of betraying their own party. Removing their own president is nothing extraordinary,” he said.

Sheikh Umar said every action had consequences, describing it as “karma” and quoting verses from the Quran (Al-Zalzalah 7-8) on the certainty of divine justice.

“So whoever does good, even as small as a speck, will see its reward. And whoever does evil, even as small as a speck, will see its recompense as well,” he said.

Bersatu’s annual general assembly over the weekend was marked by open dissent.

A poison-pen letter surfaced ahead of the event, 122 of 169 division chiefs broke ranks to attend a separate lunch, and Muhyiddin was heckled with calls to resign during his keynote speech.

The former prime minister also disclosed in his address that some had been collecting signatures to oust him.
