LOS ANGELES, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) — Warner Bros. and New Line’s horror film “The Conjuring: Last Rites” dominated the North American box office with 83 million U.S. dollars on its opening weekend, according to data released Sunday by measurement firm Comscore.
It’s the third-largest opening of all time in North America for a horror film, only after 2017’s “It” and 2019’s “It: Chapter Two.” Internationally, the film took in 104 million from 66 territories for a global debut of 187 million dollars.
Based on real events and directed by franchise veteran Michael Chaves, the ninth entry in the more than 2-billion-dollar theatrical Conjuring universe stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, among others.
“The Conjuring: Last Rites” holds an approval rating of 56 percent on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes to date, and received a “B” grade from audiences on an “A+” to “F” scale polled by market research firm CinemaScore.
Another newcomer, Disney’s musical historical drama film “Hamilton,” opened in second place with 10 million dollars.
After four consecutive weekends as box office champ, New Line’s horror film “Weapons” moved to third place with 5.37 million dollars this weekend. The film has grossed 143 million dollars in North America through Sunday.
