Bersatu has been urged not to be too hasty in making important political decisions for Perikatan Nasional, including naming the prime minister candidate.
Sanusi Nor, the election director of PAS and PN, said Bersatu cannot make such decisions on its own without the consensus of its coalition partners in PN.
“The same goes for seat allocations in Sabah, and the naming of a chief minister candidate. My view is that Bersatu should not be overly enthusiastic on its own,” he told FMT.
Sanusi‘s comments come after Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali announced that the party’s annual general assembly had unanimously resolved to nominate party president Muhyiddin Yassin as its prime minister candidate.
The issue of PN’s poster boy for the 16th general election has frequently been a bone of contention among the leaders of the coalition’s component parties.
Last November, PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin denied that Muhyiddin was confirmed as PN’s official prime minister candidate, emphasising that PAS can lead the coalition.
However, several Bersatu and Gerakan leaders have stated their support for Muhyiddin.
On July 29 this year, Hashim said PN will decide on its prime minister candidate only after the coalition wins Putrajaya.
Muhyiddin has also reportedly said he does not reject the likelihood that Bersatu vice-president Ronald Kiandee would be a candidate for Sabah chief minister.
However the matter remained to be decided by Bersatu’s leadership, he said.
