BUKIT MERTAJAM: An elderly man was killed in a brawl near a hut in Cherok Tokun here.

Police were alerted to the incident about 3.22pm yesterday.

Seberang Prai Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Helmi Aris said the investigation revealed that at the time of the incident, the victim and five friends, including the 70-year-old suspect, were chatting at the hut.

“All of a sudden, the suspect came from behind and hit the victim with a stick until he collapsed.

“The suspect then took out a knife and stabbed the victim before fleeing the scene,” he said in a statement.

Helmi said paramedics who arrived at the scene confirmed the victim had died.

“The cause of the incident is believed to be a misunderstanding between the victim and the suspect which continued from three days ago.

“Five people were detained to assist investigations into the incident,” he added.

The case is being probed for murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction.
