KUCHING: What started as a fun day out at the Segulai Sejalai 2025 Karnival Jom Heboh turned into a relief-filled moment for a woman from Asajaya who had long endured toothache but avoided treatment out of fear.
Known only as Norlida, the woman in her 40s had travelled to Kuching simply to enjoy the carnival’s festivities at Dataran Perayaan, Petra Jaya.
But after indulging in some sweets from one of the stalls, her toothache flared up again.
“A friend told me there was a free dental check-up here at the carnival. I was in pain, so I immediately went to the booth,” she said.
“After receiving treatment, I felt so relieved.
“The problem I had been carrying for so long finally ended today,” added Norlida, who declined to be photographed as one of her front teeth had just been extracted.
Norlida was among more than 1,000 visitors who took advantage of the free dental services provided by the Kuching division Dental Office during the three-day event until Sunday.
Dental officer Dr Judith Edward said the dental booth has always been a crowd favourite at the KJH programmes they have joined.
“This is the second time we’ve been invited to participate, and we are grateful for the opportunity to raise awareness about oral and dental health.
“We not only provide exhibitions and the latest information on dental care but also offer free check-ups, screenings, and basic treatments for visitors,” she said.
Dr Judith added that for those requiring further treatment, referral letters to government dental clinics would be issued for follow-up care.
The dental booth also featured interactive activities for children, making learning about oral hygiene fun and easy to understand for young visitors.
The lively atmosphere at the booth contributed to a family-friendly environment, as parents could receive dental care while their children engaged in the activities provided.
Dr Judith said the encouraging response showed growing awareness about oral health, but many still need encouragement to seek early treatment.
“This is the real benefit of programmes like KJH. It is not just about entertainment but also about providing essential healthcare services to the people,” she said.
