KUANTAN: The Pahang Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitian) captured a young, male elephant spotted roaming in the quarters area of the Jerantut Health Clinic in Jerantut on Friday (Sept 5).

Its director, Rozidan Md Yasin said his team would relocate the wild animal to a suitable habitat such as Taman Negara.

“This incident is rare in the area, but it is common for young male elephants to leave their herds,” he said when contacted by Bernama on Saturday (Sept 6).

On Friday, it was reported that an elephant was spotted roaming in the area of the Jerantut Health Clinic quarters.

Rozidan advised the public not to take matters into their own hands if they encounter wild elephants.

“Quickly report to Perhilitan if you spot or detect wild animals so that appropriate action can be taken, thus avoiding any unwanted incidents,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jerantut deputy OCPD Dep Supt Mohd Azahari Mukhtar said the incident only caused minor damage to the fence of the health clinic’s quarters.

“The elephant initially tried to enter the forest area next to the clinic. When he tried to cross over, he stepped on the edge of the fence in the area,” he added. — Bernama
