BABY-faced South Korean heart-throb Doh Kyung-soo, also known as D.O. of Exo fame, kept a full house at Axiata Arena under his musical spell on the eve of Merdeka, Aug 30.
For two hours, the 32-year-old star got K-pop fans singing and dancing at their seats in the popular indoor stadium, and delivered 25 of his hit songs as part of his on-going ‘Do It! Concert Tour’.
Three melodious songs kicked off his show at 6pm — ‘Do You Remember’, ‘Nobody Knows It’ and ‘Wonder’.
The K-pop idol emerged on the dot, wearing a black jacket and a white T-shirt, and greeting everyone with his trade mark “Annyeonghaseyo!” which elicited all-round cheers.
And he quickly transitioned from “day to night” with his jazzy fourth song ‘Mars’, that showed a drizzling evening in Paris.
Fifth song ‘Where You Were’ was equally jazzy, and it was here that the crowd started to sing along.
BOY NEXT DOOR
The schoolboyish star then burst into a fast number, ‘Pop Corn’, which invited everyone to stand up and dance at their seats.
Featuring bright-coloured cartoon images with the singer himself between them, it ended with a thundering applause, and a heartfelt greeting “I love you Malaysia!”
D.O. wished his guests Happy Merdeka and Malaysia Day, before he burst into ‘5 Minutes’, that showed a blue sky on the screen behind him.
D.O. said: “Every birthday deserves a burst of colour, even the nation’s birthday.”
He then sang his popular number ‘Sing Along’, and urged everyone to look at the bright side of life.
D.O. briefly disappeared backstage, and the big screen showed a medley of four songs, ‘The First Snow’, ‘Don’t Go’, ‘Growl’ and ‘Love Me Right’, for the crowd to sing along.
He then returned in a white suit and black T-shirt, and belted out the upbeat and motivational ‘It’s Love’.
Introducing his band comprising two guitarists, a keyboardist and a drummer, D.O. described them as his “true heroes”.
“Give my dear friends a big hand, ladies and gentlemen!” said D.O. before he sang the sentimental ‘My Dear’, while sitting on a raised platform that rose to the ceiling.
A large, crescent moon emerged on the screen for his next song, ‘That’s Okay’, and he resembled the boy sitting on the moon in the Dreamworks Studios logo.
FEEL GOOD
As soon as the platform lowered him to the floor, D.O. began to sing ‘I Do’, a feel-good song that was accompanied by a multi-coloured star.
“Guess what I had for lunch today, guys?” asked D.O. as the crowd shouted “satay”.
“Yes, I had satay, and I can never get enough of it.
“I also enjoyed fried rice and after this show, I’d love to have laksa.”
D.O. then got everyone to say “We love laksa, we love nasi goreng, and we love satay”.
“I’m so happy to be here tonight.
“Ladies and gentlemen, you are very sporting and I hope to serenade you for many more years!” said D.O.
DEAREST
Dedicating his next song ‘I’ll Be There’ to his family, friends and fans, he said that going on tour made him happiest.
Another heart-warming song, ‘Draw My Path’ came next, with a green forest on the screen.
This was followed by the sweet-sounding ‘Somebody’ and ‘In Another Life’ which had a beautiful piano solo.
“So sorry we’ve come to the end of the show, this is my last song for the evening, ‘Simple Joys’,” said D.O. as the crowd chanted “we want more”.
LYRICS
D.O. once again went backstage, and the screen flashed the lyrics for ‘I’m Gonna Love You’, which the crowd sang along to.
The crowd was right in predicting D.O.’s return, and the last three songs were the sentimental ‘Rose’, the fast-paced ‘Fit’ and a boisterous version of ‘Sing Along’.
Now dressed in a dark green T-shirt, blue jeans and a black cap, D.O. wished all Malaysians a “great Merdeka party”.
D.O., who has three EPs and a studio album, is also an actor who has starred in more than seven films and television dramas.
His concert was organised by Unusual Entertainment.
